Більшість українських сортів грецького горіха створено на Буковині, на розташованій у Чернівцях Придністровській дослідній станції садівництва. Характеристики буковинських сортів грецького горіха відповідають вимогам сучасного ринку плодів цієї культури. Їм властива скороплідність і висока толерантність до хвороб та несприятливих чинників довкілля, а за якістю плодів вони значно виділяються на фоні сортів французької, угорської, італійської та молдовської селекції. У сортів горіха з латеральним плодоношенням дерева порівняно невисокі, зазвичай скороплідні та високоврожайні. Завдяки цим перевагам латералів витрати на закладання горіхового саду вдається значно швидше компенсувати.

Зважаючи на переваги, які латеральні сорти забезпечують товаровиробникам горіха, селекційну роботу Придністровської дослідної станції садівництва було спрямовано переважно на створення таких сортів. Свого часу відомі селекціонери Ф. Т. Затоковий, Л. Ф. Сатіна та В. І. Сайко створили лише три сорти грецького горіха з латеральним плодоношенням — Чернівецький-1, Буковинський-1 та Клішківський.
Придністровська дослідна станція садівництва цю роботу продовжила. Так, вже 2016 року наукові працівники установи запатентували новий сорт Легінь, якому властиве латеральне плодоношення. Окрім цього, державне випробування нині проходять створені в установі сорти Красень (заявка №16284005 від 05.07.2016) та Гетьман (заявка №16284004 від 05.07.2016), яким теж притаманний латеральний тип плодоношення. Селекційну роботу не спиняли, і 2019 року передали в Міністерство аграрної політики і продовольства України для проходження кваліфікаційної експертизи ще один перспективний сорт грецького горіха з латеральним типом плодоношення — Скарб(заявка №19284006 від 05.11.2019).
