В Україні сьогодні відзначається День матері.
Він встановлений згідно з Указом Президента від 10 травня 1999 року і відзначається кожної другої неділі травня. Цього дня вітають матерів і вагітних жінок – майбутніх мам.
Це свято виникло у США. Спочатку це була ідея пацифістів – відзначати його як день єдності матерів у боротьбі за мир. Але подібна концепція не мала широкої підтримки ні в США, ні в інших країнах. У 1907 році американка Анна Джарвіс з Філадельфії у пам’ять про свою матір виступила з ініціативою вшанування матерів. Першим визнав День матері офіційним святом штат Вірджинія у 1910 році. А 1914-го президент США Вудро Вільсон оголосив другу неділю травня національним святом на честь усіх американських матерів.
Після завершення Першої світової війни День матері почали відзначати і в деяких європейських країнах.Читайте також: Google привітав із Днем матері дудлом-аплікацією
На сьогодні День матері відзначається у 85 країнах світу. Українці теж долучилися до його святкування, і сталося це у 1928 році, щоправда, не в Україні, а в Канаді. Ініціатором став Союз українок Канади. Наступного року свято відзначалося вже й у Львові. Ініціативу канадських жінок підтримала головна редакторка тижневика «Жіноча доля» Олена Кисілевська. 1929 року «Союз українок» зініціював впровадження цього свята на Тернопільщині. Організації «Просвіта», «Рідна школа», «Пласт», «Сокіл» організовували концерти, конференції, фестивалі по всій Східній Галичині. Відтоді День матері відзначали дуже широко.
Зі встановленням радянської влади на західноукраїнських землях свято було заборонене. Лише з 1990 року завдяки зусиллям громадських організацій, зокрема Союзу українок, Свято матері повернулось в Україну.
