4 жовтня 1875 р. відбулося урочисте відкриття університету, якому було надано назву Чернівецький університет ім.Франца-Йосифа.
Мав різні назви: імені Франца Йосифа у 1875–1918 pp., Universitatea Regele Carol I din Cernăuţi (1919–1940) і Чернівецький державний університет після 1940 року. З 1989 року Чернівецькому університетові присвоїли ім’я Юрія Федьковича.
Перший ректор — відомий учений і громадський діяч К. Томащук. Тут викладали і вели дослідницьку роботу науковці європейського та світового рівня: економіст Й. Шумпетер, юрист Г. Гросс, історик Р. Кайндль, славіст О. Калужняцький, мовознавець С. Смаль-Стоцький.
Після розпаду Австро-Угорської імперії у 1918 році Університет до 1940 року вважався румунським вищим навчальним закладом.
У 1940 році після входження Північної Буковини до складу УРСР Університет реорганізовано у державний вищий навчальний заклад з українською мовою навчання. У 1989 році Університетові присвоєно ім’я визначного буковинського письменника Юрія Федьковича, у 2000 році — надано статус національного.
Сьогодні в Університеті функціонує 2 інститути: Інститут біології, хімії та біоресурсів та Інститут фізико-технічних і комп’ютерних наук, 12 факультетів: географічний, економічний, іноземних мов, історії, політології та міжнародних відносин, архітектури, будівництва та декоративно-прикладного мистецтва, педагогіки, психології та соціальної роботи, математики та інформатики, філологічний, філософсько-теологічний, факультет фінансів, підприємництва та обліку, факультет фізичної культури та здоров’я людини, юридичний; коледж. Діє кафедра військової підготовки.
З нагоди святкування 144-ї річниці від дня заснування Чернівецького національного університету імені Юрія Федьковича планується низка заходів.
Зокрема, сьогодні у Мармуровій залі відбудеться урочисте дійство, присвячене 144-й річниці.
