За кордоном вже майже століття собак використовують як хвостатих терапевтів. В Україні ж увагу до каністерапії (лікування за допомогою собак) почали звертати лише нещодавно, визнали її позитивний вплив. Зазначається на офіційному сайті Чернівецької міської ради.
Зокрема, заняття за участю тварин (собак, коней) вже включені до плану занять в закладах інклюзивної освіти. Проте, на відміну від коней, спеціально відібрані і підготовлені собаки є набагато доступнішими для комунікації з людьми.
Нещодавно проведені експерименти на кафедрі екології в Чернівецькому Національному університеті підтвердили, що лише проста присутність собаки під час тестів та екзаменів дозволила знизити рівень тривожності у студентів, як першого, так і випускного курсів.
Саме тому, з метою розвитку каністерапії на Буковині, ознайомлення і залучення спеціалістів з цього напрямку, підвищення мотивації до навчання у дітей, залучення до активної допомоги людям з особливими потребами власників собак, волонтерів, організації читань, арт-пікніків, візитів, інших заходів реалізується проект «Каністерапія як ефективний спосіб мотивації до навчання та соціальної реабілітації людей з особливими потребами» громадською організацією «Джем ШМ» за підтримки Чернівецької обласної ради.
Стартовою подією проекту є організація дводенного тренінгу з каністерапії з 30 до 31 серпня, який проведе у Чернівцях відомий в Україні та за кордоном спеціаліст Олександра Береговенко. Участь в тренінгу є безкоштовною, але потрібна попередня реєстрація. Захід триватиме з 11.00 до 17.00 години.
